Don't think- just buy it.
I'm a biologist that does a good amount of field work in the southern US. I've been using a large Tactical Tailor bag from my time in Iraq to carry around the usual supplies- reference books, reflective vest, pens, notepad, rulers, water bottles, rain jacket, aid kit, etc. As bomb-proof as that bag is, it's just way too big to be carrying around in the brush. I wanted a hydration carrier that is small, organized, and can take a beating. I found the M.U.L.E. a few weeks ago, and it seems to have solved all my problems. I put the bladder in my cooler on the way to a job site and it stays cooler for way longer than I ever use it. Additionally, now I'm not throwing away plastic bottles every time I use them. The M.U.L.E. holds everything that the previous bag does and it's 1/3 the size. My only real complaint is that the straps are a tad uncomfortable, but I'm willing to put up with it considering how well it does everything else. Easily the best buy I've made in a long time. I'm considering buying my wife one for whenever we go hiking and camping.

I've put around 50 miles on this bag hiking around Wisconsin and so far it's been wonderful. The design allows for good amout of storage without adding bulky side pockets or pouches. It isn't waterproof but It has handled the rain very well and has kept everything dry. It has been perfect for day hikes with the dog, plenty of space for everything you need and durable enough to get it to where you need to be.

Faulty Reservoir
The reservoir cap failed to seal on my second use, consequently I took a bath and lost half of my water when I bent under a wire; I was disappointed that this unit failed this quickly. On the other hand, the pack is everything I expected and holds what I needed and held up - just expect to have to buy a reservoir that works.
