Bite Valve Material: medical grade silicone

Straw Material: BPA-Free

Bottle Material: Tritan makes the Better Bottle clear, vibrant, durable, dishwasher safe and 100% BPA-Free.

First-time use: What’s the blue/black/clear/pink thing on top of the cap for? Do I remove it or cut it to drink?

The blue/black/clear/pink thing is the CamelBak Big Bite™ Valve.  This patented feature provides easy drinking and spill-proof safety. Do NOT remove or cut this piece to drink. Simply bite it slightly and sip as you would out of a straw.

What happens if I put sports drinks/juice in the CamelBak Better Bottle?

Use of any of these drinks in the bottle is fine, but thorough cleaning after each use is recommended.

Can I put hot liquids in it?

Yes, hot liquids can be used in the CamelBak Better Bottle. However, if you are using the Better Bottle with Bite Valve, please be aware that the experience will be similar to drinking hot liquid through a straw and use caution.

What max temperature (freezing/boiling water) can the CamelBak Better Bottle withstand?

The CamelBak Better Bottle can withstand being filled with boiling water or stored in below freezing temperatures. We do not recommend boiling the bottle itself.

Is the CamelBak Better Bottle microwave safe?

Feel free to use the CamelBak Better Bottle to warm up liquids (ie, up to a minute), but we don’t recommend cooking your dinner in it.

Can/How do I freeze the CamelBak Better Bottle with Bite Valve?

You can freeze the bottle but make sure:
1. The bottle is not completely full when you do this (we recommend only 3/4 full to allow for expansion of the water as it freezes to ice).
2. The bottle is right side up
We also recommend that the bite valve stem NOT be flipped up or down if there is any frozen water in the tube.  Wait until thawed.

Does the CamelBak Better Bottle work with filters?

The CamelBak Better Bottle is compatible with filters that adapt to a 63 mm screw top opening (in other words, it’s compatible with most filters on the market).

What happens if I take the straw off?

Removal of the straw allows a “tip and sip” mode of drinking.

Can I use with carbonated beverages?

You can use any beverage in the CamelBak Better Bottle, however we do not recommend the use of carbonated beverages with the straw configuration. To use with carbonated beverages, we recommend that you remove the straw and drink via “tip and sip.”

Can I use the CamelBak Better Bottle in high-altitude/ low-pressure environments (i.e. airplanes, mountain altitudes, etc)?

Yes, but with special care.  Keep the bottle right side up with the bite valve in the closed position.  Remove the straw for additional protection. Expect a bit of “spurt” during the first sip.

Does it hold residual taste?

No, there is no residual taste, and it’s also stain-resistant.

How do I clean the CamelBak Better Bottle™ with Bite Valve?

First pull off the bite valve and the straw from the cap. You can clean your bottle by hand or in the top rack of the dishwasher. For cleaning by hand, you can soak all parts in warm soapy water.

What is BPA?

Bisphenol-A is an ingredient used to make polycarbonate. In recent months, there has been increasing consumer demand for a bottle that is not made with Bisphenol-A (BPA), and CamelBak is proud to offer BPA-free bottles with the same great properties customers have come to expect from polycarbonate: vibrant color, clarity, durability, dishwasher-safe, and with no residual taste. The entire CamelBak bottle line is now available in BPA-Free materials in North America.

Why did you change from polycarbonate to this new Tritan™ material?

Customers have asked for a BPA-free alternative to polycarbonate. CamelBak has a long history of developing innovative products by listening to our customers and we have been committed to finding a BPA-free alternative to polycarbonate (PC). After exclusive research and material trials, CamelBak was the first to develop and deliver Tritan to market.

Does this new BPA-free Better Bottle leach any chemicals? What type of safety testing has been done on the new Bottle?

After rigorous 3rd party testing of the BPA-free Better Bottle, no harmful chemicals have been detected to come in contact with, or leach into food/beverage surfaces. A FCN (Food Contact Substance Notification) notice #729 declared that Tritan is safe and meets all EPA and FDA guidelines for material that is to come in repeated contact with food.  In addition, we have verified that all materials used in the bottle including Tritan meet the stringent guidelines set by California Proposition 65.  Extraction tests were completed by independent 3rd party researchers, verifying that the new material meets all requirements as set forth by organizations such as:

  • FDA food safety standards
  • European Community food safety standards
  • Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare
  • California Prop 65
How do I know if my bottle is BPA-Free?

The BPA-Free logo will be printed on the side of the CamelBak Better Bottle if it is a BPA-Free version. In the store, the BPA-Free bottles will display a large BPA-Free sticker.

I have an older CamelBak Bottle that’s not BPA-Free. What is it made from?

The original CamelBak Better Bottle with Bite Valve is made from polycarbonate.
The cap is made of:
a. Polypropylene – for toughness and sealing performance
b. Thermoplastic elastomer (on the outside of the Better Bottle with Bite Valve Cap) – for a comfortable grip

The bite valve is made of Medical-Grade Silicone – for long life and taste-free performance

Is polycarbonate safe?

CamelBak has monitored scientific research concerning the safety of products that include BPA.   Based on a broad range of scientific findings, we firmly believe in the safety of our products. We are not recalling our polycarbonate bottles.

While there is not consensus on the issues surrounding BPA, recent comprehensive reviews of polycarbonate and BPA have concluded that estimated daily exposure to BPA poses no known safety risk. However, we intend to closely monitor recent reports from The National Toxicology and Health Canada. The findings from tests by the following organizations indicate that BPA exposure does not pose a safety risk:

  • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
  • US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • The Harvard Center for Risk Analysis
  • The American Council on Science & Safety
  • Many regulatory bodies worldwide, including the European Commission Scientific Committee on Food, the United
  • Kingdom Food Standards Agency, and the Japan Ministry for Health, Labor, & Welfare
What is your BPA-free Better Bottle™ made from?

The CamelBak Better Bottle™ line is made from a new copolyester polymer called Tritan™, made by Eastman. It offers the same great qualities that we have come to expect from polycarbonate bottles and is 100% BPA-Free. The BPA-Free CamelBak Better Bottle™ is now shipping to retail stores.

The Better Bottle Caps are made of Polypropylene – for toughness and sealing performance

The Big Bite™ Valve is made of Medical-Grade Silicone – for long life and taste-free performance

What does the Recycle #7 symbol mean? The number code inside a recycling symbol is a resin identification code, used primarily by those in the waste stream management industry. It is not a measure of safety, but indicates what an item is made from so that recycling plants know how to categorize and recycle it. BPA exists only in polycarbonate #7 bottles, but not in all #7 bottles, despite a great deal of misinformation in the media and public perception. It is possible that a #7 bottle does not contain any BPA at all.
Recycling codes 1-6 refer to specific materials, while #7 is a miscellaneous category that simply signifies that a product does not fall into the categories 1-6.
#7, or “other” plastics are often made of multiple resins or layers of different types of plastics. These may include microwavable packages, snack bags and industrial plastics. If a product does not have a recycle symbol on it, it is automatically categorized as #7 or “other.” Your BPA-Free Better Bottle with Classic Cap does not have a recycle symbol on it. Why not?

The primary reason is that our bottle is meant to be re-used, not recycled. But also, we’ve discovered that there are more myths and misinformation about #7 plastics than truth. One of these misperceptions is that many people associate the #7 recycling symbol with polycarbonate. In order to differentiate our new BPA-free Better Bottle from our polycarbonate version, we chose to remove the symbol, and hopefully reduce confusion.. The new Tritan™ bottle is still considered “other” and will be categorized with #7 plastics but it is completely BPA-Free.

I love this bottle! It looks good, doesn't spill & feels great to drink out of. I can't be without mine now.

I recently purchased this bottle after consideration of buying the sigg sports bottle and valve. I bought camelbak due to having previous items which have lasted and are quality! This bottle is bpa free which was a must and why I initially looked at sigg as I didn't want my liquids contaminated by the plastic over a period of time. It is also extremely easy to drink from and can be held like a normal glass rather than tilting it. Also, you get a lot of liquid from one suck of the straw!

this water bottle is great! I use it for school and it is durable and so nice! it also holds alot of water and is spill proof!
Flag COOP 01.13.2012
"Spill-proof" does not mean "leak-proof." They do not tell you this, but the air intake vavle regularly leaks, so the bottle has to remain upright. What a pain.
Flag DAISY 01.03.2012
I totally drink WAY more water with this. Maybe too much... Anyway love the colors and the product!
Flag MELISSA 01.01.2012
Love the water bottle. However, I find that it tends to leak whenever I put it in my bag or backpack. Other than that, it's a nice bottle and easy to clean.

First let me say i love the bladder systems, both military and civilian, that I've owned. I expected the same from the 2 of these bottles, but they have been a dissapointment. the bite valves tear easy and the bottles leak on both. No plastic taste for me but ive had wet papers and gear due to the leaking. I guess ill have to go back to bladders or my nalgene's.
Flag AKEMP 12.15.2011
I wish camelbak would sell replacement lids for this bottle. I have had the hinge on the bite valve break three seperate times which then causes the bottle to leak and not close properly. This is really starting to irritate me. I now have three bottles with out any tops.
Flag JANETT 11.30.2011
I like the idea of this bottle, but when i work out at a very high intensity level I don't like the fact that I have to hold my breath to suck the water out. I usually take off the cap when my pulse is very high. Wouldn't buy it again
Flag DANIELLE 11.21.2011
i'm so disappointed with this bottle! i paid $15 in a Merrell outlet store. My mouth gets sore trying to suck through the straw and I cant get the mouthpiece clean. It smells mildewy and grosses me out. I end up taking the cap off to sip. I think its poor service that they won't offer refunds or exchanges through the company.
Flag KARA 11.04.2011
Bottle is not spill proof! My bottle will leak when it is just sitting up straight and spills out when it is turned over. And the flip broke off after only a few weeks.
